Supervised by Partnership Centre members, Professor Jon Karnon and Kenneth Lo, Amanda Reyes Veliz from University of Adelaide has been awarded a first class Honours degree for her thesis, “End of Life Care in Residential Aged Care Facilities: A Realist Review”.

Her research identified four context-mechanism-outcome-configurations in relation to the provision of high quality end-of-life care (EOLC) in aged care facilities: Culture (EOLC was perceived as important care to be provided); Family (family were effective care advocates when knowledgeable and supported in decision-making); Communication (communication facilitated care through mutual understanding between and within levels of care); and Systems (adequacy of organisational processes and resources to deliver EOLC where necessary). Attempts to improve EOLC should assess the local context to inform the potential to trigger the mechanisms of culture, family, communication, and systems.

Amanda is now based in Canberra, working at the AIHW, as well as converting her thesis to a manuscript.
