PCHSS researchers Professor Paul Glasziou AO and Professor Enrico Coiera have been recognised as Australia’s top researchers in the fields of Epidemiology and Medical Informatics respectively, in this year’s edition of The Australian Research Magazine.

The Australian Research Magazine uses the number of citations for papers published in the top 20 journals in various research fields, including Engineering and Computer Science and Health and Medical Sciences, over the past five years to determine who is awarded the title of top Australian Researcher in their field.

Professor Glasziou leads PCHSS Research Stream 2.1, and his research focuses on areas such as overtreatment and overdiagnosis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he collaborated on a review exploring the number of COVID-19 positive patients who were asymptomatic, finding that around 17% of patients were asymptomatic.

Professor Coiera leads PCHSS Research Stream 1.2, with research focusing on patient safety, consumer e-health, and evidence-based decision support. In 2021 he published a review assessing the frequency, fidelity and impact of clinical decision support system (CDSS) literature, finding that only 0.3% of CDSS studies were replications.
